TV Ratings Tuesday: ‘LA to Vegas’ gives FOX a lift, ‘Chicago Med’ hits season high

Masked Scheduler's Ratings Smackdown

Oopsy, before I get to what I’m going to check out midseason on the networks, I completely forgot "The Indian Detective," which I also watched over the holidays. It's also on Netflix. This one was a fun four-part miniseries (I don't know what to call things anymore). It felt very blue-sky USA Network before they traded in ratings for dark (although it's mostly set in Mumbai) with a bit of "Bones" (the classic he's a-she's a) thrown in.He's a Canadian cop who is suspended for a month because of a bad drug bust. He goes to see his dad in Mumbai and winds up helping his upstairs neighbor, who is a lawyer defending the poor. Through helping her, he discovers that his drug bust may not have been as bad as everyone thought. Lots of comedy here.I also finished "Black Mirror," which was not my favorite season. Here's my ranking of the six episodes. There are probably 500 different iterations of this:"Metalhead""Hang the DJ""USS Callister""Arkangel""Black Museum""Crocodile"***The nets started bringing back their new and returning shows last night. Back in July, I offered the mid-season MASKYS. There were not a lot of comedies to get excited about. The one that sort of interested me was "AP Bio" on NBC, which reminded me of "School of Rock." Other than that, a lot of really bad duds.I think each network has at least one drama that could do some business. The irony of all this is, now that FOX is on the brink of being separated from the sibling studio, they have two pretty good fastball-down-the-middle dramas in "9-1-1" and "The Resident." The latter was the only A-rated pilot for me. "9-1-1" is interesting because it comes from Ryan Murphy, so we will see how long before this conventional rescue drama goes off the tracks. Looking forward to checking it out.Speaking of Ryan Murphy (sort of), "Rise" (NBC) looks like a potentially better version of "Glee." CBS has an Alan Cumming drama -- "Instinct" -- that looks promising, and ABC's "Deception" looks like your meat-and-potatoes procedural with a cop and a sidekick with a superpower. He's a magician. It feels to me like the networks saved some of their better stuff for midseason, so let the games begin.Email me at masked.scheduler@gmail.com or follow along on Twitter @maskedscheduler.

Definitions:Rating: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns. Share (of Audience): The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time. Time Shifted Viewing: Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include  viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.
