Christian, Muslim youths condemn Plateau killings

Group operating under the aegis of Muslim and Christian Youth organisation of Nigeria, Plateau state chapter on Tuesday condemned the unfortunate killings of over 200 persons in Barkin Ladi local government area of the state by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

The group also called on the people of the state to put aside ethnic, religion and political differences and work to ensure that the culprits who carried out the killings are arrested and prosecuted and work with Gov Simonn Lalong to ensure lasting peace is restored.

State coordinator of the group Nantok Jerry Amos in a statement made available to newsmen in Jos condemned in strong terms, the senseless and mindless destruction of lives and property.

He said the Muslim and Christian youth organisation of Nigeria is determined to promote religious harmony, peaceful co-existence, political stability in Plateau.

As a group we are gravely saddened by this development and calls on the security agents to quickly bring this dastardly act to an immediate halt as it is unacceptable. ,”We cannot continue to toe this path to perdition.

The group deeply empathizes with those who lost their loved ones, shares in their pain and pray for the reposed souls of the deceased.”

Also another group the National Council of Women societies NCWS in Plateau chapter also commiserated with the people of Plateau over the killings in the state

The group in a statement jointly signed by its president, Mrs Felica Bala and Secretary, Barrister Rauta Dakok said women particularly are saddened by the recent killings as they bear the brunt of such brutal attacks as our husbands and children are killed leaving many as widows and some without children.

We say enough is enough and call on government and security agencies in the country to be up and doing to protect the lives of the poor and innocent who are defenseless in the face of these killers.

We also call on our traditional and religious leaders to rise to the occasion and talk to their people to be more vigilant and embrace one another for the sake of peace.

We also call on the federal government to do all within its power to fish out the perpetrators of the acts and bring them to book to serve as deterrence to others in future.

We call on all to embrace dialogue as a means of settling dispute and not taking arms which only leads to more problems than solving one on ground.
