NEMA makes preparatory response for 13 states on flooding list

Following the recent flood alert by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency, NIHSA, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has listed thirteen states likely to be affected and contagious to flooding by rivers Niger and Benue, as it  constitutes five response team to follow up assessment of affected areas.

Director General of NEMA, Engineer Mustapha Maihaja at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja said that the agency was collaborating with stakeholders for flood preparedness and response in thirteen states namely Kebbi, Niger, Kogi, Edo, Anambra, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Adamawa, Taraba, Benue and Nasarawa.

He said that from NIHS’s report, release of Shiroro, Kainji and Jebba dams has also contributed to the steady rise of water level in affected areas.

He emphasised that according to the NIHSA alert riparian states and communities along river banks may be flooded by a systematic daily rise in the water level from the two popular rivers Niger and Benue, adding that from NIHSA’s monitoring station in Lokoja , River Niger and Benue there is need to be watchful for the likelihood occurrence of flooding.

Meanwhile the DG said that the agency would constitute five teams  which would visit the flood possible states and areas to access facilities in those areas and contact, prepare and access all company’s and major  supportive stakeholders.

The stakeholders include Federal Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment, Nigeria Metrological Agency, Nigeria Hydrological Agency, National Orientation Agency, among other, Maihaja said.
